MVR CANCER CENTRE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE

ORGANISING SECRETARY
Dr. UMA V SANKAR

It gives us immense pleasure to invite you all for our first seminar series on “Health economics in Cancer care”. Health economics is of paramount importance for a developing country like us facing two-third of the problems of cancer with just one third of the resources to combat it. Our  expenditure on the health sector has only risen from 1.2 per cent of the GDP in 2013-14 to 1.4 per cent in 2017-18. With increasing life expectancy the burden of cancer also increases together with the medical advancements the cost of cancer care together with the out of pocket expenses also mounts up. We need to choose wisely in our management strategies to maintain a sense of balance.
According to Globocan 2018 report (IACR)the total number of new cancer cases in India is around 11.5 lakhs and the figure is likely to reach nearly 17.3 lakh new cases in 2020. Data also reveals that only 12.5 per cent of patients report for treatment in early stages of the disease. The fact that often cancer is diagnosed only at critical stages adds to the steep economic burden.
The principles of economics in health care are seldom addressed in our curriculum to help us dissect out the issues and to formulate a critical thinking in our therapeutic choices. The fundamental dilemma in health care planners is how to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the competing choices in care available at our disposal and guiding the treatment policies towards the appropriate choices in care. The seminar intends to discuss these issues and empower us with the right knowledge and skills. The main aim of the seminar would be:

 To sensitize the medical community on the need of looking at the economic aspects of health care
 To outline the basic principles in health economics
 To highlight the research tools in health economics

We have four very important resource persons with great insight in the topics they are deliberating for the seminar. We hope this seminar would be extremely useful to Health care professionals especially in the field of oncology, Community medicine specialists, Health economics students and researchers alike, to motivate them to do further research in this field.
